Jon Bone & the Karuna Movement

Jon Bone - May 7, Townsite Brewery $13 advance, $15 door
“Jon Bone delivers a captivating stage presence with a rich and soulful voice that, reminiscent of inspirational artists like Bob Marley and John Lennon, sings of love, equality, social justice, and a peaceful state of being.“ -Aaron Bethune of PlayItLoudMusic.
Jon Bone was born in NorthWestern Ontario, but has his musical roots firmly planted on the West Coast of Canada He developed much of his skills playing solo on the streets and in the cafes of the communities he would pass through as a young traveler.
Throughout this period, music and meditation were his sole preoccupations and became a passionate mission. When he wanted to take his music to the next level, Jon enrolled in the Jazz Performance Program at Vancouver Island University and studied with world renown jazz guitarist Pat Colman.
During that few years of disciplined training and education, Jon began recruiting like minded musicians for the band projects he’d envisioned and performed steadily on the weekends with several interesting collaborations in a variety of styles including jazz, blues, soul, folk, rock, pop, funk, hip-hop, and world music.
When he moved on from the scholastic environment in 2006, he had the good fortune of befriending Juno nominated reggae artist IBO, who invited Jon to play with him on his “Sweet Like A Sugar” Tour with Jamaican dancehall artist Culture Brown. This deepened Jon’s appreciation for Island rhythms and fostered his connection with drummer and producer, Juan Parris, who had also played on the tour.
Shortly after the tour, IBO was in a serious car accident that hospitalized him for a whole year. This event profoundly affected Jon and lead him to take his his musical mission, and his life, even more seriously. With IBO still in recovery, Jon reconnected with drummer Juan Parris and launched his band project, The Karuna Movement (Karuna means Compassion).
They started on March 21, 2007 (the international day for the elimination of racial discrimination) with a sold out, three hour show involving 14 talented musicians that had the room just hopping. The next day they headed into the studio to begin production on The Karuna Movement’s debut album, “Island Life”.
Now, a few years later, Jon has produced a top notch EP, toured throughout Western Canada, and performed at several major festivals including Calgary Reggae Festival, Diversity Festival, and a headlining slot at Islands Folk Festival.
He has also shared the stage with very talented artists such as Clinton Fearon, Rootz Underground, John Brown’s Body, Delhi to Dublin, Shane Phillip, Randeesh, Goodbye Beatdown and Moses Maze and enjoyed radio play on many stations across Canada and globally including WOLF, CHLY, CHMO, VIBE, CJSW, FOX, CHMA, WERG, KKUP, KJAG and CBC, to name a few. . .
Jon is currently polishing up “Island Life” with The Karuna Movement and completing preproduction on a soulful/acoustic/reggae/pop album entitled, “Sweet to be Free” of which “I Live it for You” is a single [on the myspace playlist].
In April 2011 Jon is releasing a live album of his trio project aptly named, “Karuna Vibes”… So look out for releases and tour days for Jon Bone and Karuna Vibes…
“I have a very strong passion for my music and mission. The music of an open heart and the mission to be of benefit. I really feel that music has the potential to inspire great social change and awakening. Therefore, I feel it my duty and privilege to use the skills and abilities I have as a musician and song writer to uplift people and to help inspire this sort of positive social change. I think that the human community needs conscious and inspirational music more than ever these days as the world can seem overwhelming and hopeless at times. So I will sing it loud! There is always hope!!! May we all develop our wisdom and a compassionate state of being. May we all be peaceful…” – Jon Bone
